Toxicological Profile of Mirazid: A review

Abstract
ABSTRACT: Mirazid (MZD) was the only myrrh-derived product registered in Egypt for treatment of schistosomiasis and fascioliasis in the form of soft gelatin capsules and was subjected extensively to many studies involving its safety or its efficacy in the preclinical or clinical phases. The aim of this review is to explore the toxicological profile of MZD in experimental animals. Periodic, standardized searches of local scientific search engines such as EKB (Egyptian knowledge bank) and international scientific search engines as Pubmed, Ovid, Medline, the Cochrane library and Embase were conducted in order to identify any articles published containing safety information related to MZD in experimental animals. Six studies were selected to evaluate acute, subchronic, reproductive toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity studies. They revealed no significant changes in hematological, biochemical, gross pathologic, weights and histopathological pictures of several organs. Also, no reproductive toxicity, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity were detected even in double therapeutic doses in rats and mice.
